Registration policy
- All students must be registered within 10 calendar days of start of the quarter or you will not be allowed into the class for that entire quarter. This is a State rule so there will be NO Exceptions!
Attendance Policy
- It is College policy that we take roll in every class and perform spot checks during labs. You must check out with the instructor if you are leaving the area or you will be marked absent for the hours you are gone. Attendance is based on a 6-hour day. Your daily attendance is reported to the Administration Office on a monthly basis. Be reminded that students on financial aid must be in attendance 86% of the total hours per month to continue to be eligible for aid. Also most classes base a portion of your grade on attendance.
Academic Policy
The following is the RTC College-wide policy on grades:
- In order to receive a Certificate of Completion for Computer Science students must earn a grade of at least "C" (no "C-" grades or below) in designated courses (all courses for Computer Science). (This is stated in the current catalog and in RTC procedure 21004.)
- We will evaluate your class grades at mid-term, if you are below a "C" in any course you will be given notification, which you will be required to sign. This will give you the opportunity to increase your efforts so that you can raise your grades to an acceptable level before the end of the quarter.
- If the student is in the first year of the program, that student will not be allowed to continue on to the second year until all first year courses are passed with a "C" or above.
- A grade of "C-" or below in a course will result in the student being placed on Academic Probation for the next quarter. If the student earns a grade of "C-" or below in the probationary quarter, the student will not be allowed to re-enroll in the program without special permission. (RTC procedure 21004.01)
- "Please note that instructors will not assign additional projects/tests as a way to improve grades after the quarter is over. This practice does not encourage proper working habits in our students and as an institution we wouldn't be able to show consistency and fairness to all students."
-Dante Leon, Dean of Technical Programs - Students who have not received a passing grade in a course may re-enroll in that course when it is offered the following school year. When all courses have been satisfactorily completed, a Certificate of Completion will be awarded.
Cooperative Education
- Students in Computer Science are reminded that being placed on Cooperative Education status is not a student right but a privilege.
- Students participating in Cooperative Education are representatives of the College and of the Computer Science instructors and students. Therefore, in order to maintain the excellent professional reputation we have earned in the IT industry we are requiring that students earn eligibility through successful completion of coursework and demonstration of job-readiness in attitude and attendance.
The following are the criteria that will be evaluated in each case:
- Each student must submit a written request to the Cooperative Education Instructor describing the job opportunity. a. Company name
- The job opportunity offered must be deemed appropriate for the individual student's skills by the instructors.
- The student must have passed every course with a grade of "C" or better. There can be no grades of "F" in any course.
- The student must have demonstrated a continuous professional attitude toward instructors and colleagues. a. For every case where attitude is in question - instructors will confer and make the final decision.
- Attendance must be a minimum of 86% monthly (as required by the College for Financial Aid)
b. Job description
c. Work hours
d. Company contact name, address and phone number
b. Students will be given verbal and written warning regarding "attitude infractions".
Computer Use
- You will be required to sign an "Acceptable Use" policy. This policy explains what you are and are not allowed to do on the school computers.
- Please do not customize the configuration on the computers in this lab. These computers are public property provided not only for your use but for those in Saturday and evening classes as well.
- No one is assigned a specific computer for his or her personal use.
- We will and often do, format and reload the computers so make sure your work is backed up in at least 2 places (floppies and/or CD's, other media). Please note that it is the responsibility of the STUDENT to back up his/her own work. We will help you with this if necessary.
Safety
- When in the labs remember that there are dangerous voltages present and take appropriate precautions.
- Remember that the equipment is dangerous and also sensitive; be careful about food and drink around the computing equipment.
- Please report any dangerous conditions or activity to an instructor immediately.
- Be aware of the emergency procedures, they are posted in the labs.
- Report any accidents to an instructor, they have first-aid kits and are trained in First-Aid and CPR.
- Know where the fire extinguishers are.
Our Website
- The Computer Science Web-Page is at www.rentontech.org, This is where we keep the Syllabi and schedules. It has lots of information about the courses and instructors. The information changes from time to time so look at it often.
ESL
- Those students that have been identified as ESL students are required to take ESL classes as provided by the Computer Science program and attendance will be included as part of their overall grade.
E-mail & Phone Numbers
- Each instructor has an e-mail address, and we expect you to have one too. A great deal of our official correspondence will take place over this medium.
